Prosthetics and Orthotics
Prosthetics and Orthotics (O&P) involve the evaluation, fabrication, and custom fitting of two distinct types of devices:
Orthoses (Orthotics): These are custom-made braces or supports designed to enhance or protect existing body parts. Orthoses can help with conditions like spinal deformities, foot drop, or joint instability1. For example, an ankle brace that provides stability for someone with weak ankles is an orthosis.
Prostheses (Prosthetics): Prostheses replace missing body parts. They can be artificial limbs (such as arms, legs, or hands) or other body part replacements. Prosthetics help individuals regain function and mobility after amputation or congenital limb loss1. For instance, a prosthetic leg allows someone to walk or run.
The manufacturing process and healthcare specialists involved in creating orthoses and prostheses differ, but both play crucial roles in improving the quality of life for people with physical challenges2.
